Koy Chapman is Gordo “through and through”.

The cliché suggests that he bleeds green and gold. The reality is that he is fully “invested” in Gordo High School as an instructor and coach.

Tuesday morning, Chapman was introduced as the new head coach of the Gordo boys basketball team.

“I played here. I feel invested, I care. I want to get it back to where we think Gordo basketball can be,” Chapman said.

Chapman returned to Gordo High School four years ago, as a mentor and coach. He served as an assistant coach for Green Wave football, basketball and baseball.

When Gordo director Mark Capp offered him the head basketball job, Chapman didn’t hesitate.

“Any time a head coaching job opens up at a company like Gordo, and you’re one of the guys the director brings in, it’s kind of a big deal. I felt like it was a no-brainer,” Chapman said.

Chapman graduated from Gordo in 2017 after a legendary athletics career. He excelled as a three-sport student-athlete, including setting passing records as the Green Wave football quarterback, and helped the school bring home the Class 3A State Baseball State title in 2017.

In basketball, Chapman helped Gordo advance to a berth in a regional tournament in 2016. It was the Green Wave’s last appearance in a regional tournament.

The basketball team lost in a Class 3A subregional in 2015.

“When you think about Gordo basketball and where it’s possible, you get a little excited,” Chapman said. “Like I said, when a head coaching job opens up at a place like Gordo, with a community that’s invested in, and you’re one of the guys they’re considering, that in itself is an honor.”

Coaching runs in the Chapman family. Koy’s father, Jamie, is a former Gordo football assistant coach. Chapman’s sister, Haley, is an assistant to the Green Wave girls basketball coach and his brother, Bo, was the offensive coordinator for Jasper High School football last season.
