Iowa Candy Company is recalling 29 items that can kill you

Sioux City, IA — Palmer Candy, a 145-year-old family-owned confectionery company, has initiated a voluntary recall of its white liquid coating products due to possible contamination with salmonella. This precaution applies to 29 types of treats, but excludes the iconic Twin Bing bars.

The recall was initiated after the supplier of the white coating material notified Palmer Candy of a possible contamination issue due to dairy powders supplied by a secondary supplier. Marty Palmer, president and CEO of Palmer Candy, emphasized the company’s commitment to product safety, stating: “When you work with food and safety, 99.9% is not 100%. I just want my products to be 100% safe for our customers.”

The decision to recall thousands of tons of products comes despite all ingredient tests coming back negative for salmonella and no reported illnesses. Production of the coating has been suspended while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Palmer Candy continue their investigation.

What to do if you have a recalled item

The recalled items were distributed nationally through retailers such as Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target and Dollar General, and in several states including Iowa, Alabama, California and more. They are available in various packaging forms, including bags, sachets and tubs.

Consumers who purchased these white coated products are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions, consumers can contact Palmer Candy at 1-800-831-0828, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This recall mirrors a similar incident in 2017, when Palmer Candy had to recall 18 products due to possible salmonella contamination from an ingredient in powdered milk. “We always conduct thorough investigations to determine what happened,” Palmer said, adding that the supplier involved will no longer use the source of the suspect dairy powder.
